Santa Paula

Kay Wilson-Bolton first began working to alleviate homelessness in her community in 2008, when she discovered that a homeless man had died in a local church on Christmas Eve. She and a few volunteers started a hot meal program that grew to 600 meals per week. She has been the acting director of homelessness services provider Spirit of Santa Paula for 15 years and currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization started a mega-food pantry, serving thousands of people each month. Kay worked tirelessly to develop partners and funding for a family shelter, case management, food rescue and food pantry programs. A contract with Cal Recycle brought in a grant of $180,000 to purchase two refrigerator trucks, and the organization rescues 2 million pounds of food a year. The State of California awarded the organization a $1.5 million grant to build a new wing to accommodate offices, classrooms, case management, additional bathrooms and showers.

Kay's tireless efforts have helped 7,000 people experiencing homelessness obtain food, shelter and the resources they need to thrive. The case managers at Harvard Navigation Center (part of Spirit of Santa Paula) have moved 70 people into permanent supportive housing. The shelter provides 57 beds, three hot meals per day, street outreach, food pantries, case management, backpacks, medicine, showers, and medical care in cooperation with the Continuum of Care. Spirit networks with housing providers and law enforcement agencies to find people who need shelter and bring them into a better place in their lives.

Spirit of Santa Paula will receive a $5,000 donation from C.A.R. thanks to Wilson-Bolton’s work.
